As apprehensive as The Big Blue Bubble team is about it, summer is coming to an end, which means it’s time for this year’s crop of interns to return to school to complete their degrees. From short stints of a few months, to 16 month long tenures in our office, our interns have learned a lot and shared a lot with us throughout the duration of their stay. Most important of all, they had a chance to be themselves here at Big Blue Bubble.

Our 2017 Interns

We spoke to each of our graduating interns about their experience over the course of their internships, and every one of them had the same answer for what they felt was their favourite part of working at Big Blue Bubble: the culture.

One aspect that all the interns seemed to really enjoy about our culture was the social activities that they often participated in. “There’s a lot of opportunities to socialize and get involved in, such as volunteering at Comic-Con and playing board games at lunch with everyone,” said Evan, our Game Programmer Intern. Our Social Media Specialist Intern Brittney also agreed that she enjoyed the social aspects of Big Blue Bubble’s culture, adding, “I really enjoyed participating in activities like Christmas in July and going out to social gatherings with the rest of the marketing team because it allowed me to get to know my coworkers when I first started here.” Esther, our Business Intelligence Intern got involved at Big Blue Bubble as well with the board games group and the different events that were held every month.

We also pride ourselves on having a supportive work environment that offers opportunities for our employees to grow and learn. Esther began by saying, “I’m so glad I got to work here rather than anywhere else because everyone is so friendly and supportive. It makes your job ten times better when you’re working with people you enjoy being around.” Brittney agreed and said, “My favorite thing about Big Blue Bubble was the ability I had to grow in the position, and the opportunities I had for mentorship from my coworkers,” and added, “I learned a lot from many different people about various aspects of marketing.” Ben, our Business Intelligence Intern added, “I really like how Big Blue Bubble has a culture of developing their employees. I had tremendous support from my boss and the HR Department,” he said, explaining that the team saw he wanted to improve and helped him accomplish his goals.

Last but certainly not least, a large part of Big Blue Bubble culture is teamwork and team building. Evan and Esther participated in the Tough Mudder Run and they said that it was the greatest team building experience they’d ever had. As Esther described it, “We had to help each other through these muddy obstacles and we had muddy high fives, and it was just a great experience!” Evan also mentioned that one of his most memorable moments was the company-wide Game Jam: “Just working on a project that’s different from your day to day work, having a lot of creative input and bonding with a small team was a lot of fun.” Ben also added that, “there’s a nice balance between social events and collaboration as well as opportunities to have your space.”

Over all, the interns agreed that they had many opportunities to be themselves and collaborate with like-minded people. Ben mentioned that the general atmosphere is welcoming and allows you to be yourself. He added, “There’s also a lot of diversity of interests in the company so even those who might be more reserved will find people they can share interests with.” We’re happy to know that the interns had a great stay with us and we’re excited to continue offering placements that give our interns and co-ops the opportunity to learn and grow here at Big Blue Bubble!
